how to play “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin – acoustic guitar lesson

An acoustic guitar lesson on how to play “Ramble On”, by Led Zeppelin. For such a mellow tune, this one is actually pretty hard to play well and takes a lot of energy. It’s one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Once you learn how to play this you’re gonna want to play it everyday! It’s a great example of Jimmy Page’s offbeat and unique guitar style. Especially those “jazz” chords he plays in the pre-chorus! Great song, great guitar player, great band. I hope you get something out of the lesson.

The guitar I’m playing here is a Taylor 214ce koa deluxe. I really like this guitar, it intonates amazingly well and it’s tone is very balanced. It’s also very easy to play.
The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze 12-53 with nanoweb coating. These strings are a little bit more expensive, but for me they easily last 4-5 times longer than non coated strings.

Folks may be surprised at how much time and effort goes into creating these videos. If you’re getting something out of the lessons and can afford to contribute to the cause, I’ve setup a Paypal link. If you can’t afford it no worries, but if you can, any amount is appreciated and will help me to continue to make the videos.

  1. Excellent solid tutorial that clearly shows me the song, but also gives insight in how to listen to a song and pay attention to the details.  Appreciate that you include the theory/breakdown too, the more I get of that, the better.  Thanks for bringing me up to speed on a song I have always dug.

  2. Just found your tutorials. Picked up the guitar again after a 30 year hiatus. Fantastic tutorials and great playing. Thanks!

  3. Great job – thanks!

  5. Awesome job. Thanks man. Your tutorials are the best I've seen. Man that prechorus is a killer on the hands.

  6. This is an outstanding guitar lesson. It gets to the point – unlike so many others out there.

  7. Dominick Popolillo

    Great job my friend. Dom

  8. He was exactly right when he said it's tough to nail down exactly because Jimmy Page is quirky hahahaha – I always said he's very tricky but I like quirky . . . anyway this was the best lesson for Ramble On that I've seen . . . I've been playing it for ages but there's always some part that's not quite right albeit I'm the only one that notices it.

  9. Here's a link to the album track he talks about. Dead on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cECAXTw_CqE

  13. Awesome video. Thank you. Are there any other effects on the sounds besides the Expression system and the mic you mentioned? Chorus, delay, colorizer, anything?

As before, thanks SO much for making and posting this and everything else you do! Super-clear instruction, and playing, and great ear!

Could I make a plea for a lesson on the electric guitar part? I'm guessing it would be pretty short, but sure would be helpful!

  15. I just sent ten bucks to this awesome teacher who never even bothers to ask out loud. In the last four years, YouTube teachers have taken my playing to a whole new level. If you have the capacity, show 'em some love. Go to the "ABOUT" tab and click on donate. I want them to make more. Thanks for another awesome lesson!

  16. Magnifique version, tu joues vraiment bien !

  17. The strumming, muting and accents of the strings are key to playing this as on the record. Very well played.

  18. This is a truly awesome lesson. This seems to be a carbon copy of the original track, and before if found this lesson I could not even find a cover version of this song on Youtube that looked or sounded correct. My thanks to you bud.
