In this Jack and Diane guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this mostly acoustic based hit from John Cougar Mellencamp.

For some reason, Mellencamp’s songs always remind me of the summertime when I was a kid. Back when MTV was playing his music constantly back in the early to mid-eighties. It is a nice memory.

In any case, Jack and Diane has some nice chord work that should be pretty easy for any intermediate level guitarist or above.

There is an electric guitar intro as well, and I will show you how to play that, but it will be on acoustic guitar.

The tuning is standard tuning E A D G B E.

After the big electric guitar intro, the verse section appears with basic triad shapes being played on strings 1-3. We then move to a transition riff that uses triads in a lower register.

The chord section is very similar to the verse. The slight differences require you to pay attention during this part of the video lesson in order to get the song right.

I will be going through each section of the song in the order that it appears in the original recording.

  1. Hey Carl! Any chance you can do a lesson on some Linkin Park songs? Maybe as a tribute to Chester Bennington? (RIP childhood legend!)

  3. Am I savage by Metallica and get in the ring by guns and roses please

  4. I also wanted to ask you, is there a healthier way to hold the guitar? I heard somewhere that holding it in the standard way is less healthy than holding it in the classical way. That's the reason why I've been holding it like so since day one, but I'm kind of questioning it, becuase I feel always like an outcast, no one plays it like that. If it's healthier, why don't you do it?

  5. Hey CArl, can you finally remove the intro before the videos? It doesn't say anything new that the title of the video dosn't say, and it's a waste of time, I always try to skip it

  6. Alexander Richards
