In this easy acoustic guitar lesson, we will take a quick look at how to play “Rocket Man” by Elton John on the guitar.

This Rocket Man guitar lesson is made very easy by the fact that we are using a standard tuned guitar with a capo at the 3rd fret. This will allow us to play in the same key as the original recording while still just using simple open position chords throughout.

To play the entire song, you will basically need to learn just two different chord progressions. There is some cool bass line movement found within these chords and since we are keeping the chord forms rather simple those bass lines will be easy to add to them.

There is one chord, the D/F# that requires you to play a standard D major chord with second fret of the low E string being fretted with your thumb. This may cause some issues for those players that feel very uncomfortable using their thumb to finger notes on the low E string. If you are one of those players you can play that note with your first finger and play the other notes with the remaining fingers, or simply leave that note out and it will still sound fine.

All of those moving bass lines create some nice chord inversions throughout the song which you should learn and then use in your own playing. Playing chord inversions is an easy way of taking chords that you already know how to play and getting a lot more mileage out of them. Some of them sound beautiful as well!

So I hope you enjoy this acoustic guitar arrangement of one of Elton John’s most beloved songs. Hopefully after watching this lesson for just a few minutes you will be ready to rock! Enjoy!
